Candida and the Hay Diet
Following the Hay Diet and separating starches from proteins reduces bloating and wind. Because it focuses on cutting out
sugars and processed food, and puts the emphasis on healthy, natural foods,
the Hay Diet, with one or two minor
exceptions (outlined below), is also excellent for treating Candida.
In my 13 years practising as a complementary health practitioner, Candida is one of the more common ailments I come across. There is no reliable test in the medical profession to identify Candida, but I use muscle-testing to find out whether a client is suffering from it. Harmless Candida yeast lives on the skin and in everyone's gut. In the past, when we all ate natural foods, Candida was rarely a problem, but the popularity of processed, sugar-laden foods and drinks has changed all that. When the yeast is fed by too much sugar, alcohol or stress, Candida can multiply rapidly and create unwelcome and unpleasant symptoms in the body, such as:
- Irritable bowel
- Indigestion, heartburn, bloating, belching and wind
- Bubbling sensations in the intestines
- Fungal infections of the skin or nails, and athlete's foot
- Headaches and depression
- Skin rashes
- Fatigue
- Wheezing
- Joint pain / swelling.
Diet is the best way to treat Candida:
- Cut out: sugar, yeast bread, white flour, all sweetened foods, mushrooms, grapes, alcohol, dried fruits and peanuts.
- Restrict: fruit and cheese.
- Drink: spring water, lemon juice, decaffeinated tea / coffee, herbal teas, lactose-free milk.
- Choose: potatoes, porridge, rice, millet, barley, quinoa, Ryvita, oatcakes, extra virgin olive oil, garlic (which is a powerful, natural fungicide), caprilic acid and lactobacillus acidophilus supplement (two other useful fungicides).
So in other words, the anti-Candida diet aligns very closely with the Hay Diet, with the minor exceptions that mushrooms should be avoided and the intake of sugary fruits and cheese restricted. I also find that the homeopathic remedies Thuya and Lycopodium are useful in the treatment of Candida, by helping to alleviate sugar cravings and cleanse the blood of any toxic build up.
